About this deal

The lightweight nylon design allowed the pilot to wear the jacket open and be comfortable in warm weather. Official versions with a safety orange interior were reversible: interior pockets had snaps and could function when flipped to the outside, the front zipper had a large fob allowing zipping from either side.

Alpha Industries is awarded its first contracts for several outerwear styles, including the MA-1 jacket and N-2B "split hood" parka. Made in Japan, their take on the MA-1 goes back to the jacket’s earliest days, when the design included additional tabs to use with things like oxygen masks. Rather than bulky leather, a sleek, lightweight yet warm jacket was needed for the new jet technology. So we’re getting the classic, slightly oversized fit, the shirring along the sleeves and that slightly shiny “Flight Nylon” shell with the blaze orange reversible interior. It looks just like the regular Alpha Industries Slim Fit MA-1 model (which you can also turn inside out to flash that blaze orange interior). But doing away with the sleeve pocket, front storm flap and flapped lower pockets gives it a much cleaner look. In the evening for family dinner in the trendy restaurant, you can wear the MA-1 VF LW with a tonal lining over your polo shirt in spring and autumn. Personalised advertising may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of information under California and other state privacy laws, and you may have a right to opt out.

This was accomplished by manufacturing the MA-1 from very high quality nylon fabrics and polyester interlinings. For example, MA-1 specifications progressed from Mil-J-8279 to J-8279A, then J-8279B, J-8279C, et cetera. If you’re willing to spend an extra ten or twenty bucks you might be better off trying the more well reviewed Rothco Enhanced Nylon MA-1.
