About this deal

In high school, teachers try to get you to take each at least once, if not twice, before going to college. The resultant ‘cold start’ doctrine was tailormade to respond to incidents like the Mumbai attacks, but the political leadership hesitated to follow through. There was the potential to really explore the concept of pressure or ethics behind the issue but this didn’t come close. I also thought that Rao’s insight into how women’s time is used to save the family money (primarily via household labour), while the family spends money to place value on the husband’s time, was an important one. An ex-cop turned private eye, Ernest, was investigating a variety of cases including a puppy mill, Yolanda's stalker, a cheating husband, and an old case of stolen jewels.

Rao argues that time and again families ‘deploy gendered strategies’ in the wake of an involuntary job loss and unemployment experience. Second, wives cannot, cannot, cannot change their will to disinherit their husbands without the permission of the husband themselves.I've read some of the other books in this series about Goldy Schulz, Colorado caterer and amateur sleuth, and have enjoyed them. There are so many people involved in this mystery that it feels that a scorecard is needed just to keep up with them all. The pictures are beautifully pictured and the hardback design makes a sturdy book to follow in the kitchen. Finally, I very much appreciated Rao’s discussion of the ‘morally’ unemployed and would have loved to see this concept brought into dialogue with Jennifer Sherman’s conception of how morality matters among the rural poor and their use of unemployment or welfare.

Crunch Time" is the fifteenth book in Diane Mott Davidson's Goldy Schulz series - a series that at this point I think I'm reading out of habit rather than enjoyment. While ninety-two percent of the labor market will experience unemployment, Crunch Time forecasts us into an even bleaker future, as the rise of technology and artificial intelligence will surely threaten any form of economic security for all Americans. The first half is jam-packed with tips on techniques and tools to set up a waste-free kitchen, as well as hacks on which ingredients can be swapped for what.

What was once an endearing quality of Goldy's personality (which is what really drives these books) has now become simply annoying and making me, as a reader, have less and less sympathy for her. This book aggravated me because she seemed to be willing to place her son and the rest of her family in jeapordy by having women, living in her home, that had been burned out of their two previous homes. A tale of two unemployments, Crunch Time details how unemployed men and women adopt the ideal job seeker norm in divergently gendered ways in the face of economic precarity. Sometimes by herself, sometimes with other cooks/friends, and sometimes with her beleaguered husband. Chaulia has done creditable work of collating evidence and presenting a lucid account of the drivers of Modi’s national security policies that have transformed India’s strategic outlook to help make the country more confident and secure.
