About this deal

The main strike against it is just how old most of these models are – the Cadians are some of the earliest plastics still in use – and the fact that Commissars aren’t that great. Even if you could get Suppressors somewhere else, this box would still be an incredibly good value based on what’s in it. Some say that it is a wonderful set to start their Warhammer journey and is well worth it to start building your Chaos army. The Daemons of Tzeentch box got a significant points adjustment with the new Chapter Approved 2019 changes, and we may see Flamers showing up in Daemon lists more at their new costs.

The Word Bearers are an obvious choice to help you make the most of the Daemonkin in your set – they have an affinity for the unborn creatures of the warp, and their rules exemplify this trait. You’re going to need at least one Lord Discordant, a Master of Possession, 1-3 units of Cultists, several boxes of Chosen and Possessed, and likely 10 Terminators. As a Starting Thousand Sons player, you want all of these models in your army, and the savings on this box are pretty great. Give it the Master of the Union Warlord Trait to not only augment the Daemon Prince’s own formidable fighting prowess, but those of your nearby Daemon units. Space Wolves don’t have Troop Scouts, which makes Intercessors even more useful for them and the Primaris Battle Leader is a fine HQ to have.

The 10 Wolf Pack models can be built as either Grey Hunters (tactical) or Blood Claws (melee), the latter of which are likely to be more valuable once Space Wolves get their next rules update. While legion will normally have a bit of an impact on what you take, I’ve left this particular list legion-agnostic for the moment; it’ll work well in most if not all of the legions (and just play differently).

Either way, the goal is simple: Despoil the galaxy and claim it, either for the Ruinous Powers or your own purposes. The Chaos Space Marines had to wait a looooong time in 9th edition to get an update, but it was worth the wait – the faction’s new codex gives the army a huge update, with lots of new units and rules and cool new tricks for every legion. Because of this, they really want to take Raptors and Chaos Spawn, which can further stack another -1 Ld on targets to help grease the wheels on their trait abilities, taking units with Ld 8 down to 5. Like the new Start Collecting: Chaos Space Marines box, it’s a bit hard to evaluate this one effectively because it’s currently the only place to get Suppressors, which are an insanely good unit for Iron Hands and, to a lesser extent, Imperial Fists armies. The one set of rules in it that might still be legal however are the rules for Be’lakor and his army of renown, but it’s likely those rules will no longer be valid after the release of Codex: Chaos Daemons.
